We've Seen Better Days

from Abyss of Time by James Paddock

about

Nostalgia is one of many evolutionary tools we have that keep us in touch with key events of our life – of our homeland. Originally named from the Greek words "nostos" and "algos" (meaning "homecoming" and "longing"), this state of yearning was thought to be a disease, but over generations of research it has become known more widely as a general longing for the past.

There's a tendency we can fall into – of "rosy retrospection": deifying our past, thinking pessimistically that life will never be as good as it was back in those days. It sure is tempting to think this way while being constantly bombarded with global and social disasters by the endless stream of today's media – who go to lengths to keep us in immediate touch with every single minor bad thing happening worldwide.

I would argue that quality of life is in many ways better than it has ever been – in this respect, not only is living for the moment deeply important, but it is also vital that we should at least try to salvage our future, as it's all we've got – time moves unidirectionally. By focusing too much on our supposedly better past years, we may lose sight of our mortality, and forget that without a future we will be nothing.

We shouldn't altogether let go of our fondness for the past, but it mustn't cloud our judgement, or drain our hope for the here and now.

=====

lyrics

The rosy glass you're looking through
Provides a sumptuous view
(To feel something)
A connection deep and vast
To what defined your past
(Your past)

It was far from worry-free
Sure wasn't singing in the rain
(Feel the rain)
But you're blind to what's to be
Nostalgia clouds your brain
(Your brain)

Here's to health
Lose yourself
Amidst the memories
But don't lose sight
We've seen the better days
And they are still to come
Let them come

(Moving forwards
Onwards and upwards)
(Moving forwards
Onwards and upwards)
(Moving forwards)
We've seen the better days
(Onwards and upwards)
We've seen the better days
(Moving forwards
Onwards and upwards)
We've seen the better days

Honour those memories
They are from what you're made
You're a stronger human being
For getting through the pain
Forgetting your past shame

Lose yourself
Amidst the memories
But don't lose sight
We've seen the better days
And they are still to come

(Moving forwards
Onwards and upwards)
(Moving forwards
Onwards and upwards)
(Moving forwards)
We've seen the better days
(Onwards and upwards)
We've seen the better days
(Moving forwards
Onwards and upwards)
We've seen the better days

(We live here and now
It's all we've got for now)
