Swallow [ft. The Final Event & Keagan Dunn] - SINGLE

about

When it comes to mental well-being, many of us are instructed to keep our darkest problems to ourselves. Airing our grievances makes others uncomfortable, so we should grin and bear and keep on smiling. But pushing down our problems invariably exacerbates them.

This mentality of putting band-aids on invisible bullet wounds is sadly seen universally across society. Adult men in particular, however, are disproportionately susceptible to it. When it comes to talking about their deepest issues, men are more often than not simply told to "man up" or to "get over it".

The majority of suicide cases are male victims. Men have fewer support groups geared towards mental health. The media recklessly and routinely misrepresents them and their internal struggles. The very worst responses to their cries for help are echoed in the lyrics of this piece.

We still have some ways to go in order to undo this deeply damaging mentality, but with perseverance and a hyper-focus on preserving our societal health and happiness, we might get there.

lyrics

[The Final Event:]
Swallow!

Doubled over in your pain
That no-one else can see
A mask of invisible shame
That you wear quite comfortably
Stuck in a chokehold
A vice that won't let go
It's starting to get too much
The keys to your stronghold
Were thrown away long ago
God forbid you make a fuss

[The Final Event:]
Just grin and bear, and fall in line
'Cos I'm afraid we just can't spare the time

You let life spit in your mouth
And obediently swallow
Keep it deep down
Quietly wallow
Don't you dare spill your guts
Saying just something would be saying too much

There's no controlling
You're best off withholding
Just accept it and move on
There's no conspiracy
We just don't like transparency
Keep your distance and withdraw

[The Final Event:]
You'd better learn to fall in line
'Cos there's a queue for the reaper's ride!

You let life spit in your mouth
And obediently swallow
Keep it deep down
Quietly wallow
Don't you dare spill your guts
Saying just something would be saying too much
Don't say it
Don't say it

[The Final Event:]
Don't shout
Let nothing out
Yours are the things we can do without
Come on!

You let life spit in your mouth
And obediently swallow
Keep it deep down
Quietly wallow
Don't you dare spill your guts
Saying just something would be saying too much
Don't say it, don't say it
Don't say it, don't say it
Don't say it!
