about

"We Should Know Better"

This song deals with the subject of targeted advertising, media campaigns, pyramid schemes and further corporate marketing stunts designed to hypnotise and persuade us.

So universal is their influence now, we have come to accept constant interruption on a daily basis by barrages of text or shockingly bright or distracting imagery vying for our hard-earned money. Sense of reality and humanity is completely distorted, with advertising companies locked in all-out war with each other for our undivided attention. While this constant performative sensory overload rages on before us, we largely ignore it. We're virtually asleep as we patrol the streets and roads that bombard us with the same old marketing spiels. Bright colours, fat lettering, and the use of neon in their signage to pollute the night air all contribute to what someone from a decade or two prior might call complete overstimulation.

Yet, we are numb. Perhaps we should try to convince ourselves that this is not normal.

lyrics

Stretching to the sky
Towering colossi
Deifying their reality
Static in the air
Forced to stop and stare
At the flashing impact writing on the wall

Advertise, anaesthetise
Incandescent, everpresent
Fortunes favour those who can be tethered
Artificial artifice
Every single edifice
Logos gleaming
Slogans screaming
“Buy now!” - we should know better

Somewhere secret, classified
The providers plot on high
Adopting a cruel mentality

Strategising, monetising
They’ll encompass all horizons
And then simply vanish altogether
Artificial artifice
Every single edifice
Logos gleaming
Slogans screaming
“Buy now!” - we should know better
By now we should know better

Advertise, anaesthetise
Incandescent, everpresent
Fortunes favour those who will be weathered
Artificial artifice
Every single edifice
Clad in neon letters
By now we should know better

Circus of the media
Growing ever greedier
Disconnection's bleeding through
Reject what they're feeding you
Parasocial paradise
Caught inside a virtual vice
Airbrushed horrors
Empty promise
“Buy now!” - we should know better
