Vultures

from Invasive EP by James Paddock

/

about

Combat drones represent one example (of many) of humankind's constant vying for technological advancement reaching a surreal nadir. We seem to wish that anything can, or should, be automated, ever dissatisfied with the mere idea of manual labour – even when we engage with our most primal tendency: war.

How far we’ve come as a species – from swords and spears to silencing our enemies with remote control, technology now saving us from even having to lift a finger, or to think twice about our most grotesque and depraved actions in war. These incredibly advanced machines are designed, and perfected, purely to kill.

It begs the question - how far are we willing to take these technophilic tendencies? How much of our daily routines and how many of our institutions will see complete and total automation in the decades to come?

How many of us will be left?

=====

lyrics

Welcome to the future
Stand in sheer awe
Have you seen our latest breakthrough?

Multi-purpose
Subtle as the darkness
Man's new servants
Summoned for the harvest

The vultures are circling
Towards a veritable feast (whoa-oh-oh)
Blood spilt under violent skies
They'll take you alive!
(Alive!)

Welcome to the future
The future of war
Can you believe what this has come to?

Silver serpents
They dwell within the darkness
Glowing, fervent
Dread puppets for the heartless

The vultures are circling
Towards a veritable feast (whoa-oh-oh)
Blood spilt under violent skies
They'll take you alive!
Our culture is hurtling
Towards inevitable defeat
Lust filled with the silenced cries
So prepare to die!

(We will do your bidding.)
(We will do your killing.)
(We are not the villains.)
(We are not the villains.)

Summoned by a declaration
Blocking the horizon
Swarming in their murmurations
With hairsbreadth precision
Technovores, conspirophiles
We hope you're happy now
Behold our fate, made flesh and vile
We hope you're happy now
We hope you're happy now

Nightmares coalesce
Synchronised as one
Blind as mole-rats
We don't see what we've become

The vultures are circling
Towards a veritable feast (whoa-oh-oh)
Blood spilt under violent skies
They'll take you alive!
Our culture is hurtling
Towards inevitable defeat
Lust filled with the silenced cries
So prepare to die!
(To die!)
