"Slave to Our Kind"

A song commenting on the subject of fame and stardom brought on by social media and mass media sharing.

Absolute power absolutely corrupts. The pull of influencing others through mass media is strong, and some will sink to any level to keep their ability to influence afloat. Good news bores us, while outrage gets clicks, and the low and absurd keep us laughing. Often, the formula for success involves debasement and humiliation rather than any earnest effort to impress.

Additionally, over time, demands and deadlines can erode at one's spirit. The urge to impress and to continue to provide "content", especially when dealing with audience numbers outside the scope of our proper understanding, can be dangerously all-consuming and lead to burnout, incidents of harassment or even personal destruction.

This song contains some scattered references to the Rainbow Season EP, an older musical project of mine which also had a lot to say about internet fame and the often-ridiculous lengths to which people will go in pursuit of it. The piano line in the chorus and the final pre-chorus are lifted from songs on this EP.

lyrics

Drink in your newfound celebrity
You’ve dreamed this would come around
Post-modern earthbound deity
Living in the cloud
You are a product of wasted years
Now able to touch the sun
Tuned into you, a wall of ears
Your fifteen minutes have begun

Turn the air blue
They adore you
Hurt a friend or two
They want more from you
Try to be true
They abhor you
Try to be you
They just ignore you

They gather for miles around
As you lose your mind for free
My friend, you're a slave to our kind
Indefinitely, yeah

You've thrown aside all humility
And swollen up with pride
You’ve compromised your identity
For the service you provide
The acid rises, the bile spills
Demands that you're not meeting
Accustom yourself to how it feels
For those oh so precious ratings

Turn the air blue
They adore you
Hurt a friend or two
They want more from you
Try to be true
They abhor you
Try to be you
They just ignore you

They gather for miles around
As you lose your mind for free
My friend, you're a slave to our kind
Indefinitely (indefinitely)
You cannot risk phasing out
The hivemind you must please
You fool, you're a slave to our kind
Eternally, yeah

Tap the vein of insanity
To quell the great unwashed
Momentous popularity
But at what cost?
Your mind's been lost

You’re a breakthrough
Without a damn clue
Rose-tinted addicts are there to revere you
You’re a breakthrough
Right out of the blue
Thousands dying to live through your worldview

They gather for miles around
As you lose your mind for free
My friend, you're a slave to our kind
Indefinitely
You cannot risk phasing out
The hivemind you must please
You fool, you're a slave to our kind
Eternally, yeah
Eternally
Eternally
Yeah
